The City of Newport News is seeking a Controller to join the Finance Department to be responsible for managing all accounting and accounts payable functions, while maintaining the City's financial accounting records in conformity with accepted principles of governmental accounting. In this position, you will be providing oversight of all functions to include Accounting, Payroll, and the Accounts Payable divisions.  The Controller is responsible for evaluating vacancies, need to fill, and changing the division structures as needed. 

A large function of this position is directing and participating in the planning, organizing and preparation of the City’s  Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), including revenues and expenses, short and long-term capital and bond-funded Capital Improvement Project (CIP) plans, financial forecasts, operating reports, debt-service funding, grant funding, and making recommendations as necessary.

This position will require frequent communication and service to various stakeholders and departments, while maintaining confidentiality. It is important for the Controller to be continuously reviewing processes over the departments to enhance efficiency, streamline work processes, and improve productivity for the City.

This position will report directly to the Finance Director.
